Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is one of the seven Institutes of Technology created as centres of excellence for higher training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India, the others being at Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Bombay, Guwahati and Roorkee. Established as College of Engineering in 1961, the Institute was later declared an Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963" and was renamed "Indian Institute of Technology Delhi". It was then accorded the status of a deemed university with powers to decide its own academic policy, to conduct its own examinations, and to award its own degrees.
IIT Gandhinagar (IITGn) is one among the new IITs started from the academic year 2008-09. It is located at Chandkheda, about 15 minutes drive from both Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad is known for its excellent infrastructure with thriving industries, prestigious academic and research institutes and an ambiance which encourages excellence and entrepreneurship. Currently the Institute is functioning from the premises of the Vishwakarma Government Engineering College.
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.
At present the Institute has eleven departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.

IIT Hyderabad started functioning from August 2008 form its temporary campus located in Ordnance Factory, Medak district. On February, 27, 2009, on its main campus in Kandi, the foundation stone of IIT Hyderabad was laid by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Hon’ble Chairperson of UPA. In its first year IITH had B.Tech. programs in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering; with total student strength of 111. Keeping its thrust on research, the Ph.D. program was started in January 2009 and the M.Tech. program in August 2009. Since 2009, our maximum effort has targeted capacity building – particularly faculty recruitment. In August 2010, IIT Hyderabad had 50 faculty members in 11 departments – more are likely to join soon and the number will grow rapidly. Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad will be the cradle for inventions and innovations. It will advance knowledge and scholarship to students in science, technology and liberal arts, and equip them to handle the challenges of the nation and the world in 21st century.
IIT Rajasthan is one among the new set of IITs announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. The location of the IIT in Rajasthan will be announced by the Govt. of India after completion of the formalities of land acquisition for setting up the new IIT in Rajasthan. However, in the meantime, IIT Kanpur has been designated as the mentor IIT for looking after the incubation activities of the new IIT in Rajasthan. The academic session in IIT Rajasthan will commence from August 2008. To start with, a 4-year B.Tech. programme will be offered in three branches, viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with a strength of 40 students in each branch. The curriculum, course structure and syllabus for the first year courses and the fee structure and other rules will be broadly same as in the mentor IIT i.e IIT Kanpur. The first year classes are proposed to be held at the IIT Kanpur campus and the students admitted will be relocated to the place in Rajasthan where the new IIT will be established. The students and the parents taking admission in the new IIT Rajasthan will be required to give an undertaking to this effect.
